In 2020, Bashar Hassoun was recognized in the “Grenzen überwinden” (Overcoming Borders) category of the Deutscher Engagementpreis (German Engagement Award) for his outstanding work with the non-profit organization FREEARTUS. Since fleeing Damascus, Hassoun has been dedicated to uniting people from diverse cultures through art and providing refugees with future opportunities. In 2017, he established LAWRENCE in Berlin—a unique space that functions as a restaurant, cultural center, gallery, and coworking space. Through these initiatives, Hassoun actively promotes the integration of refugees into society and creates employment opportunities. The award ceremony featured a laudatory speech by Burkhard Wilke, Managing Director and Scientific Director of the German Central Institute for Social Issues (DZI).
