The non-profit company FREEARTUS artists + refugees united for freedom was founded in 2015 to support refugees – especially from the war zones of the Near and Middle East – professionally, empathetically and in an equal partnership, and to use artistic and academic means to do so. In addition to what is commonly referred to here in Germany as integration, the activity soon expanded to include comprehensive cultural exchange – a modern form of international understanding. Symbol of this: the LAWRENCE berlin mitte, opened by FREEARTUS three years ago – the cultural forum with gallery, event rooms and a large Arabic café and restaurant is dedicated specifically to the encounter between German/European culture with Syrian/Arab tradition and, above all, the present, which is much more than the horror images in the media. Advocating for acceptance and tolerance, promoting openness and curiosity and benefiting from one another is becoming increasingly difficult for FREEARTUS. Resentment, discrimination and outright hatred are becoming increasingly evident, and not only on social media – in contrast to the ongoing interest and sympathy that Germany still enjoys in the Middle East. With the projects, whether in smaller or larger contexts, whether here or there, the team is trying to counteract this drifting apart of society and cultures.
