In 2019, the #FARBENBEKENNEN Award honored refugees who have demonstrated exceptional entrepreneurial spirit by founding organizations that promote democratic values and societal cohesion. The Jury Award was presented to Bashar Hassoun, a Syrian-born entrepreneur, for his establishment of the Lawrence Restaurant and Cultural Center in Berlin. Located in the heart of Berlin at Oranienburger Straße 69, Lawrence serves as a cultural melting pot, bringing together people from around the world through art and authentic Arabic cuisine. Notably, approximately 90% of the staff have refugee backgrounds, exemplifying successful integration. The restaurant’s motto, “make orders, not borders,” reflects its commitment to fostering unity and understanding. The #FARBENBEKENNEN Award, jointly implemented by the Berlin Senate Chancellery and Berlin Partner, recognizes initiatives that encourage peaceful co-existence in society.
